What kind of world do you want?
We can't make up the rules when it comes to physics, but we can make up the rules for human society and our own lives. We have the freedom to choose what is most important to us and how we want our world to work. Above and beyond the mostly universal laws such as "don't kill people", "don't intentionally hurt people", and "don't annoy people who have deadly weapons", the rules you can make up are pretty unlimited. This exercise will help you define what sort of rules you want your world to have. These are rules for yourself, first and foremost. As Gandhi says, "Be the change you want to see in the world." If the rules work well for you, then you can ask the rest of the human species to apply your rules.
So, come up with at least five rules that you believe you, and the world, should respect. Make them as powerful as you can. (Don't worry about covering the previously mentioned laws about killing or hurting yourself or others, since we all basically agree on those already.) Be creative! You've always wanted to be a philosopher king or queen, I know you have. Well, here's your chance. Imagine the world that you want to live, and love, in and make up at least five laws that should be carved into stone outside every public building. (Maybe under a statue of you, the one who made the world a most excellent place!)
Ok, seriously, make some real, honest, compassionate laws for you to test out. Write them down somewhere, in pen, pencil, crayon, or pixels. Once you're satisfied with your new set of laws, give yourself a few days to really live with the new world that you have created with your new rules. Once you've done that, proceed onto part 2 of the exercise.
